About This Pipe Tobacco

Manufactured in a century-old brick building in picturesque Lauenburg, Germany, Dan pipe tobacco has gained quite a worldwide reputation among smokers, with a wide variety of blends and cuts on offer. Andreas Mund became the successor in charge of production when master blender Jürgen Westphal retired, and is assisted by Heiko Behrens as well as Michael Apitz of Dan Pipe.

Part of the American History series of pipe mixtures, Old Ironsides from Dan Tobacco celebrates the oldest battleship in the U.S. Navy, the USS Constitution or "Old Ironsides." A Latakia lover's dream, it offers a high percentage of Cypriot Latakia, complemented by Dark-Fired Kentucky, Perique, and Virginia varietals. Pressed and aged for twelve weeks, it's then cut into flakes — the perfect homage to America's tobacco tradition.

Like the USS Constitution herself, this is my flagship. Of the tobaccos I've known over the years, this is my favorite. Bold jerky, peppercorn, applewood campfire ash, and plum/raisn. She's an adventure. Much like a ship bucking a sea swell, she starts hard, but once the initial kick is gone, she finishes calm and soothing. Warms the soul on a cold, wet winter day. I went into my old haunt looking for an alertative to nightcap because f**k STG...I was steered toward this. I read the reviews, and i was cautiously optimistic. Its rare I've seen a tobacco get this thorough of a glazing in the reviews, but...my brothers in briar, I am deeply, madly in love.
r>Rubbed out and stuffed in my oxford half bent Dublin, I fired it up and instantly knew it was going to be a good time. Smoked cool to the tongue, though that pipe has a tendency to get hotter than average in the bowl. Haven't figured out why. Anyway, sipping some cold brew yunnan black tea, and watching a very electrically active storm brewing a few miles to the south, was the perfect set and setting for this smoke.

This is a desert island blend for me. I will be picking up...just so many tins along the way. Truly, if you are a latakia lover, if you love nightcap but dont want to contribute to the evil empire, if you love Penzance but dont feel like fighting over it like black Friday... in my humble opinion, this is better than both.
