Rossi - Rubino Antico (8404) (6mm)
Poor Finish on the Briar Wood
When received the glossy finish looked very nice. After a few smokes the finish began to discolor and fade to the point where you could not even see the wood grain. It looked bad but instead of going through the trouble of returning I wiped it down with rubbing alcohol to remove the top layer of gloss and some of the red paint. This removed the gloss and created a matte like surface but the wood grain came out. I rubbed in some mineral oil and it looks fine now. I would not recommend Rossi smooth finish pipes for this reason. Not sure if the rusticated ones are better. Another complaint is compared to my Savinelli One Rusticated (404) the Rossi Rubino Antico (8404) is missing the flattened bottom allowing for sitting, I was expecting this to match the 404 since I like to set my pipe down on a table without it rolling over. I am keeping the 8404 pipe because I do like the Zulu (6mm filter) shape. The vulcanite stem is very nice, it has a more substantial button for clenching compared to the 404.
