G. L. Pease Quiet Nights — First Bowl Review

About forty-five minutes in, dark fruit began to emerge. The closest comparison was stewed plum or fig, though it resisted a precise identification. A tang developed alongside the fruit that resembled mulled wine rather than natural fruit acidity.
## Middle Third
The smoke became richer and developed a distinctly buttery mouthfeel. The fruit and smoke integrated well, creating an impression of stewed fruit over oak embers rather than separate notes of sweetness and smoke.
A rich breadiness appeared later in the bowl along with an earthy quality reminiscent of the smell of rain when it starts to hit pavement. The overall aroma suggested warm dark bread, cedar, and damp stone.
## Final Third
The buttery texture gradually faded, leaving a drier smoke. Leather returned, now carrying more oak smoke than earlier in the bowl.
The retrohale became noticeably peppery while remaining smooth.
Rather than becoming ashy, the bowl finished on sweet mature Virginia notes with impressions of dark malt and a hint of cocoa.
## Retrohale
Mild through the first half of the bowl. In the final third, black pepper became the dominant impression, accompanied by lingering incense and oak.
## Mouthfeel
Initially dry, becoming buttery through the middle third before returning to a clean, dry finish.
## Nicotine
Medium. Slow-building and deceptively gentle. The strength became apparent only near the end of the bowl through a noticeable sense of physical relaxation rather than a sudden nicotine hit.
## Room Note
Immediately after smoking, the roomnote carried the expected smoky aroma. After leaving briefly and returning, the smoke had largely dissipated, revealing a lingering cedar-incense fragrance.
## Burn Characteristics
Excellent. Required only occasional relights. Smoked cool with a slow cadence and very light tamping. The blend never became harsh or ashy and finished cleanly.
## Overall
Quiet Nights is an exceptionally balanced English mixture. No individual component dominated for long. Instead, the blend evolved gradually from leather and incense to dark fruit, warm bread, oak, pepper, and finally mature Virginia sweetness.
It rewards patience and slow smoking. Rather than demanding attention through intensity, it reveals itself over time through subtle changes in flavor, texture, and aroma.
