HU - Asmara 100g
Versatile
Small amount of Latakia, Orientals taste sour in a good way, has some depth but also straight forward enough to be a background smoke as you do other things. The taste is not punchy, it softly envelops you. Really versatile and I realized today that it became my daily smoke even though it didn't blew my socks off. The only negative is that it tends to bite if you are not careful, as others have mentioned.

Sweet, Smooth, very tiny bit lemony, bready. Doesn't bite at all. My best straight Virginia experience so far, I'm mainly an English smoker though.
HU - Fayyum 100g
Too sweet for me.
You know that moment when you accidentally drop too much sugar in your drink and on every sip you wish it had less sugar, but still power through it? Yeah, this is Fayyum for me, it has no artificial, but cloying sweetness that is not enjoyable to me. If I ignore sweetness, the tobacco is fantastic, with a lot of flavours. Kentucky is noticeable, and Black Cavendish is too much noticeable... Has a lot of Latakia, but doesn't feel like a Latakia bomb because of the sweetness. Overall, it's balanced and well-rounded, typical of African Line. The tin smell is amazing, has a note of woody/smoked cheese in Peterson's 965 or Balkan Mixture. I mixed Khoisaan - the tobacco that was too bitter for me and Fayyum in 50/50 proportion, and it's still too sweet(!). Zulu really hit the nail on the head with the balance of smokiness and sweetness. I wish there were 50g tins. Now what do I do with 90g of tobacco that I don't like?

Anyway, this is great tobacco. Besides the typical tobacco notes, I get note where the herbal medicine is mixed with a fruit, which is pretty fun. Doesn't bite that much. This is definitely not an everyday smoke, but I smoke it every 2-3 days or so.
G. L. Pease - Horizons Flake 2oz
Younger brother of Quiet Nights
Quiet Night and Horizons have this unique note that I can only describe as powdered red brick (I know it's too abstract) that I thought was Acadian Perique in Quiet Nights, but apparently Horizons doesn't have it, so I don't know from what this gorgeous note comes from. Just amazing smoke, not as dense as Quiet Nights, but definitely not light to smoke in the morning. It demands attention; it asks for it in every puff and will not let you keep it in the background as you do other things. I will not describe smoking qualities; by now, everyone should know that G.L. Pease tobaccos are just fantastic smokes. You need to try really hard to make smoke uncomfortable. I'm 3 years through my pipe smoking journey, and I'm baffled that somehow Peterson's (notably ex-Dunhill) tobaccos are more popular than G.L. Pease. Especially when they cost more.

Pipe smoker that tried Cigar for first time.
Probably my worst tobacco smoking experience ever. Just pure bitterness. I don't know if it's an acquired taste and I need some time, but I don't want to go through it tasting this, no thanks.
G. L. Pease - Abingdon 2oz
Very easy, well balanced and consistent smoke.
What a great easy smoke: Easy to pack. Easy to lit. Easy to keep lit. Easy to taste, there is not much depth (for me) and its a plus for this tobacco. Doesn't bite Just consistent, smooth experience. Many tobaccos provided higher peak smoking experiences but none were so comfortable and easy to smoke. 10/10 in its own category.
G. L. Pease - Windjammer 2oz
This is what I imagined aromatics to be when I started smoking a pipe.
From Quiet Nights to Horizons Flake to Windjammer, GL Pease just doesn't drop the level. A freshly opened tin has the smell of not in a bad way, overripe fruit. To me, the most prominent thing is fruit taste; I adore blends that somehow manage to make tobacco carry fruit notes. This natural fruit taste is what I always wanted aromatics to be, not that chemical stuff that makes you feel like you are chewing cheap bubblegum. And the most amazing thing, you don't need to focus on taste to differentiate it, it is just there, in every puff. Once you concentrate on the taste, the 2nd layer of notes shows up, providing a complex interplay that, frankly, I don't have the vocabulary to describe. One thing I can say is that there is definitely nuttiness from Burley. It's in the "family" of Virginia, but it's not even close in taste profile to VaPers and other Virginias that I have tasted... If I could give it 10 stars out of 5, I would.
Savinelli - Juno 2oz
What a great straight Virginia.
Came in very wet and had a weird smell similar to dog food... after drying it up for a bit smells better now. Smokes fantastically, doesn't bite at all. Sweet and bready, with other notes appearing as well that I don't know how to describe.
HU - Makhuwa 100g
My first Burley blend
The first few smokes couldn't taste anything but the cocoa topping, then the topping subsided to the background, and I felt those "Earthly, chocolatey" notes that people describe when talking about Burley. So far I'm enjoying it, it provides a nice break from traditional vapers and english tobaccos that I smoke. Tends to bite, be it dry or wet, so sip slowly. Surprisingly it is my first tobacco that doesn't gurgle at all It would be unfair if I rated it below 5 because I don't know how it compares to other Burley blends.

My first g.l. pease blend and oh wow, definitely in my top 2 and it's fighting for first vs HU Zulu. Just amazing.

My favorite Virginia
I'm not very experienced with VaPers but I have tried some classics like Escudo, PS Navy Flake and Bullseye, Peterson's Deluxe Navy Rolls and some others. Unfortunately I haven't tried Orlik Golden Sliced and people say these 2 compare. Anyway, this tobacco is fantastic, especially for the price. The top of the bowl is so intense freshly cut grassy/hay notes that you would think it's a topping. As bowl progresses, perique starts shining more and more while grassy notes are subsiding and in the last third of the bowl you have totally different flavors than in beginning. I've never smoked tobacco that could change its taste so much during smoking. Doesn't bite at all. Amazing tobacco, very fun to smoke because of progression and all stages are very enjoyable.

Cult - Blood Red Moon 50g
Non aromatic smoker, can't get the hype.
I was promised that it has no chemical taste, turns out it has typical cherry chemical taste that you will find in any cheap bubble gum, I hate it. Don't feel any chocolate either. There are better aromatics out there like Guilty Pleasure.
HU - Dark Sea 100g

I just can't taste anything except aniseed, expected much more. edit: Other reviews convinced me that there is something I don't get about this blend... and they were right! Special thanks to the guy who said that this is more of a great tasting Virginia rather than an English, which made me approach it in a different way. Please Smoking Pipes change "family" to Virginia because it is misleading and will leave many people disappointed. I don't know what exactly helped me, because I've tried many things: Drying it to crisp, moistened, then dried it again. close to a year has passed, maybe age did it thing, or the fact that I smoked it 20 times and became better at discerning flavors. I feel a bit of spicy Kentucky at the back of my nose, Virginias at the front, and aniseed lingering in the background. From half of the bowl, the Dark Fired Kentucky starts showing itself and gradually intensifies the barbecue flavor. Can taste the burley providing body to the smoke. I don't feel any Latakia, though. As I'm writing this, I just reloaded the second bowl, and I never did it for other tobaccos! Only HU can make a tobacco that you can smoke even if you don't particularly enjoy it. I apologize for lack of spaces in the text, but smoking pipes website for some reason deletes spaces after you edit review...
HU - Khoisaan 100g
Raw, bitter smokiness interplay
I don't have the ability to decipher and describe each note, I feel an interplay of different "smokinesses" but it is too raw and bitter for me, need some counter balance. It's like coffee without sugar, some people just like it and some just don't. Quality is there and if you are that type a person you will not regret grabbing this. If you like a little bit "sugar" then my beloved Zulu is the way to go.

Very enjoyable. tried it again after experienced many tins of popular English tobaccos, this is good stuff, especially for the price.

Very good, morning blend
Very weird that it has 3.8 score, I assume people expect something complex, but it is very simple and tasty and that's its beauty. You will not regret buying this. Also, one of the most beautiful tins.
Presbyterian - Presbyterian 50g
Perfect morning smoke.
At first smoke nothing, but after that? Oh my god, I don't know which tobacco does that but it has such unique, not punchy in the face flavor, it's my favorite in the mornings or evenings when I want to relax from complex tobacco. Also, the history and tin of this blend are cool.
Capstan - Flake Blue 1.75oz

Unique, has a smell of a freshly cut grass. Didn't impress me by taste whatsoever, but I'm not experienced in straight Virginia. Love the tin though

Non chemical taste aromatic
If you are that guy or gal that despises aromatics because of its too artificial chemical taste then this tobacco is for you. I don't know about notes and stuff, it tastes sweet and you can taste tobacco as well, perfect for a occasion where you want make others ask "what smells so good?" while also being able to enjoy tobacco.

Finally got it.
I am relatively new pipe smoker and to satisfy my curiosity of how pure virginia tasted like I bought this 1 year through pipe smoking hobby. For 1 year I didn't like at all, I could feel the hay and natural sweetness, but thought "is that it?", it also burned too easily. Tried it several times , was chasing something that wasn't supposed to even be there, and was ready to give it away to anyone. Until 1 year later, after more or less learning how to smoke properly, in the morning deciding what to smoke and being a bit "burnt out" from my current blends, I decided to give it a try and oh man, the simplicity and natural sweetness just gifted me one of the best morning smokes I've ever had. I don't think it's suitable as an everyday smoke, at least for me, but for the mornings when you want simple smoke to let the brain rest from trying to discern notes in complex blends - perfect. Frankly, I don't know how it compares to other virginia tobaccos so it would be unfair if I gave it less than 5 stars.
HU - Zulu Mixture 100g
My favorite blend.
I've been a pipe smoker for 2 years, tasted around 20 blends and this is just another level. After smoking this, Peterson's 965 and Nightcap lost its flavors to me... Smoky, creamy, sweet, fruity. edit: A year has passed since this review, I've tried around 40 tobaccos and this is still my favorite and most bought. After venturing into G.L. Pease blends I must say that Quiet Nights is a formidable challenger to this one. Also, for some reason smokingpipes breaks my spaces after I edited review...
