Sandblasted Hawkbill Tobacco Pipe

In recent decades the Hawkbill shape has become synonymous with Italian pipe making though the design originated in France sometime during the late 1800s. This particular rendition was crafted by German artisan Werner Mummert, a pipe maker with a style that's hard to pin down since he's an impressively diverse carver. It's still somewhat reserved in its execution compared to Mummert's signature Barrel and Bulldog, but has enough distinctive character to stand out in anyone's collection while remaining easily recognizable as the German carver's work. A plump, Apple-esque bowl sits perched on the end of the shape's defining arching aquiline shank before ending at the abbreviated, softly downturned saddle stem. Though the proportions are still conventionally bowl heavy, this is a rather compact piece overall, making it well-suited for clenching and carrying around in a pocket. But thanks to the craggy sandblast that covers the bowl's surface, this is a pipe you'll have in hand frequently. Werner's ability to coax out beautiful ring grain is truly remarkable and offers a tactile experience that few other pipes are capable of. The bowl's jet-black stain color coordinates with the vulcanite mouthpiece while the rim and shank wear a fiery contrast stain with a trim band of smooth briar gracing the shank end.
