Sandblasted Paneled Cavalier Tobacco Pipe

Werner Mummert's extensive experience in engineering is evident throughout his body of work, with the German carver having a penchant for playful, imaginative designs that push the boundaries of pipe composition and construction. A striking showcase of his style, this paneled Cavalier by Mummert is a wholly unique interpretation of the classic shape that marries a practical form factor with a whimsical aesthetic. This piece exudes a notably architectural character, with the flat heel of the bowl and base of the vertically-inclined shank forming a sturdy foundation for the pipe to sit with confidence. From the bowl's heel, thick, straight walls rise toward the rim, framed by four crisp facets. This facet work continues out back into a Foursquare shank, which takes on a geometric stance as it emerges from the bowl and then turns upward at a 90-degree angle, topped with a bent saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. The Cavalier shape's requisite removable foot cap is instead seen here at the aft side of the shank, allowing for moisture to be drained for a cool, dry smoking experience. Mummert's beautiful sandblasting work is displayed across the stummel, revealing waves of defined growth rings across the bowl and shank alike. With the bowl stained a vibrant red, the transition an inky black, and the shank a warm yellow, this piece is brimming with both visual and tactile intrigue.
