About This Pipe
Here's a pipe with abundant personality. This Shield shape by Lasse Skovgaard features a scalloped rim to accentuate the ridgeline surrounding the forward curved panel, which also descends to the pointed heel which flicks slightly forward for an echo of the same ridgeline situated at the rim. The transition is gradual and beautifully curved, rising high on the bowl and curving upward and back toward the bowl as it expands at the end of the shank. That surface at the shank end is the only portion of the pipe that is smooth, offering some subtle contrast of texture and hue. In a Churchwarden form that is higher than it is long, it's balanced and remarkably light in hand, with that slender length of stem contrasting with the color of the stummel and almost disappearing, despite its length, in visual weight. You'll have to look far for a cooler pipe, in my opinion. This piece is a prize.
