About This Pipe
The Hawkbill, with its Ball-like bowl and dramatic downturned shank and stem arrangement, is inherently steeped in the Italian school of shaping. American artisan Silver Gray has here produced an affable rendition of the shape, retaining much of its neo-classical proportions while also imbuing it with an extra touch of lift. Here the shank in particular has been given a lengthy, more subtle turn, the bowl's nearly spherical shape allowing the transition to rest higher, while also creating a slight forward cant and a strong sense of implied momentum. A warm, rich contrast stain with a high gloss polish further emphasizes the shape's smoothness in profile, and pairs nicely with a cumberland mouthpiece.
