About This Pipe
Scottie Piersel's Relief Contrast finish is especially appropriate for this Zulu, with its rugged plateau rim and dynamic forward cant. At almost eight inches long it's a substantial pipe, though its slender length possesses an elegance that wonderfully complements its more rugged aspects. That contrast finish is achieved by sanding the peaks of the sandblasted surface of the briar, in this example rendering smooth patterning resembling icicles descending the flanks.
As with all of Scottie's pipes, she has chosen complementary stain and vulcanite colors, here projecting a subdued mustard yellow, one of the most recent, most popular colors for interior design, so it also has the potential to harmonize with one's surroundings, depending on how avant-garde you may be. Of course, what Scottie's pipes are most famous for are her pencil shanks, though she is certainly outstanding at more traditional shapes. She achieves durability in these shanks with stainless steel sleeves running through their interiors, providing a ruggedness unlooked for in something appearing to be so delicate. This pipe is anything but delicate. This is a pipe designed to be smoked hard yet maintain its great appearance throughout its long life.
