Smooth Bent Dublin with Bakelite Tobacco Pipe

Sam Adebayo is one of those carvers whose work can't really be parsed down to a handful of signature shapes, so to speak. Rather, he's an artisan whose personal style naturally presents itself in every piece he fashions, regardless of shape. In Adebayo's case, said style is a fusion of Danish and American Industrial aesthetics often dressed in playful color palettes thanks to Sam's penchant toward bakelite stems. This bent Dublin here is a perfect example of that fusion and the American carver's portfolio at large.

The proportions are hearty and robust all the way from shank-end to rim, making it a sturdy, palm-filling number. However, that muscularity has been carved into quite the elegant, forward-urging form. The consistent curve of the underside is off-set and balanced out by the soft recurve of the stem while the bowl juts forward, its broad rim speckled with natural plateau and presenting an asymmetrical, wavy orientation. Those shaping cues call to mind the Danish school, but Sam's use of proportions here cater more to the American tradition, all lent a modern presentation thanks to the bakelite stem's vivid, teal color to shine against the stummel's contrast stain, rife with parallel straight grain.
