About This Pipe
Though still operating within a fairly classical or neo-classical camp, this compact Horn from Kent Rasmussen is quite the different interpretation of the timeless design, forgoing the typical elongation of the shank for something more muscular and dynamic. In profile, it takes on an almost horizontal silhouette, with its deep forward cant and stout transition allowing the eye to follow a more linear progression across the composition. Sharp leading lines also frame either flank and the edge of the rim, balancing the form's strong sense of asymmetry with a more geometric or architectural style. Of course, those sharp lines lend more than dynamism to the shape, additionally framing the block's choice grain so that each and every pattern stands alone within the composition, allowing the viewer to better appreciate birdseye, flame, and crossgrain alike. Stunning piece.
