Sandblasted Bent Dublin (IV.19) Tobacco Pipe

It's the unique combination of disparate elements united in unusual ways that gives us new perspectives on pipes, and talented carvers like Michael Parks often show us how beautiful those combinations can be. Here the Canadian carver has combined a Dublin with the diamond shank of a Bulldog, but he's also provided a bit more forward heel, bringing the visual weight of the bowl forward and giving it more foundation. The ridges of the shank flow effortlessly down and across the heel, and the curve of the upper shank is soft to match the gentle curve of the stem. The blast is incredibly deep and craggy, with wide growth rings all around the bowl, and the slightly convex rim provides a bit more height and a bit more surface area for that texture. I'm always astonished when crisp and sharp ridgelines maintain their edges on sandblasted pipes, and even more astounded when those crisp ridges blend seamlessly into the bowl. It's a magic trick that just takes raw talent.
