Sandblasted Tomato with Bakelite Tobacco Pipe

Another one of Micah Redmond's signature Tomato renditions is offered here. Defined by a squat bowl, stout transition, and forward-urging sense of momentum, Redmond's Tomato designs never cease to impress, displaying the American artisan's deft carving hand and artistic creativity in how he's able to make each iteration subtly unique in its own way.

This specific piece displays a shank that rivals the bowl in regards to visual weight. It's not a particularly chubby number, yet the bowl is so squat and pointed toward the fore that the shank stands in stark contrast against it. With an almost nonexistent transition, the shank rises almost to the rim, flaring gently into the bowl's protruding waistline. Micah's dressed it, then, in a handsome tanblast, revealing a crisp line of cross grain around the bowl and dimples of birdseye underneath. For a modern touch and bright color palette, Redmond's paired it with a sky blue stem of bakelite. Such a bright contrast is a common convention of his, while the bakelite will patina warmly with time and use.
