About This Pipe

Leveraging a background in graphic arts and woodworking, Brazilian carver Luiz Lavos fashions a wide range of eclectic shapes that are singular in look and execution, with this Cherrywood being one such shape. A whimsical interpretation of the classic form, this piece boasts a tall, semi-cylindrical bowl that flares from its flat, sure-sitting heel to its broad, chamfered rim. As it flares, the bowl takes on a dramatic forward cant that imbues the totality of the shape with a dynamic posture. Out back, a sharply angled shank emerges from the low-set transition and stretches out to meet a saddle stem of horn, with this stem terminating at approximately the same height as the bowl's rim for a touch of balance across either end of the composition. A crisp, earth-toned sandblast dresses the stummel and draws out rugged grain across the briar's surface, the finish's dark complexion contrasted by the stem's more vibrant hues.
