Smooth Lumberman with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

Marked by an elongated, oval shank, short saddle stem, and Billiard bowl, the Lumberman is a classic shape that can vary across renditions in its proportions. English and French makers will often fashion it slightly longer than a Billiard, while many Italians will dramatize the form, exaggerating the length drastically. Peter Heding here presents a version that fits in well with the Danish style. Proportionally, it caters toward English and French examples, but the lines have been notably softened to created a supple, gentle aesthetic compared to more rigid, stolid style of the Anglo-French tradition.

The shank is flattened considerably, almost becoming as broad as the lower bowl and the edges kept smoothly rounded. Meanwhile, the bowl tapers upward toward the rim, like a Brandy, a common Billiard shaping cue when shaped by Danish hands. While this piece is quite traditional, hewing close to the archetypal form, it's something of an outlier within the Danish carver's portfolio — Heding often preferring more organic and Freehand shapes over pipe chart standards. It's dressed in a vivid contrast stain, highlighting birdseye all along the underside as streaks of flame grain adorn the bowl, and the lighter hues of the finish are complemented handsomely by Peter's inclusion of boxwood at the stem base.
