About This Pipe
Here's something a bit unusual from Hans "Former" Nielsen: a particularly modern style of bent Dublin, pairing a sweeping, classical style of well-rounded bowl against a paneled shank. The result feels quite separate from his fairly traditional style of shaping, which is so identifiable as "Former." And yet, the signs of it being Former's work are there — most notably in the sandblasted finish, its dense lines of grain bringing not just a fine texture, but also a beautiful profile to the piece, especially when paired against a smooth-polished and contrast stained rim. It's excellent work from one of the foremost of Danish pipemakers, and something that bends the expectations of his familiar audience.
