About This Pipe
Known for creative approach to classic pipe design, English artisan Chris Askwith regularly expands upon traditional pipe shapes with extroverted color palettes and alternative materials, while also fashioning creative Freehand designs. This Twisted Billiard design is a rare addition to his portfolio, and it deftly combines Askwith's creativity and precise craftsmanship with the Billiard's archetypal characteristics.
In silhouette, this piece reflects the a timeless renditions of the Billiard shape: The proportions are well balanced between shank and bowl, and the bowl is upright and stolid in typical English fashion. However, the shank's intricate shaping imitates the aesthetic of braided rope, creating the illusion of twisted briar. Moreover, this is a large Billiard rendition — on par with a Dunhill ODA — offering substantial chamber depth and also allowing for greater appreciation of Askwith's creative approach to the shank. It's all dressed in a classic auburn stain, but the hand-cut stem of polyester offers a vibrant accent of dandelion yellow.
