Sandblasted Strawberry with Ivorite (1496) Tobacco Pipe

Like several of his other Strawberry renditions, this piece from Jeff Gracik embodies a muscular, American Industrial sense of proportions but with a Danish style of shaping. Both shank and bowl flare toward the respective stem and rim, the shank being more crisp and hard of line, though, contrasting the bowl's rounded, high-set waist. As such, the transition here is the trimmest part of the stummel, neatly tucked underneath the bowl's bulging nature and allowing the shank and bowl to maintain their own separate sense of visual weight.

Compared to his other iterations, this particularly piece from Jeff is considerably more upward-flicking of shank, tightening the transition and making for a consistently arced underside that curves more tightly only at the fore-most part of the rim. The subtle downward turn of the saddle stem balances out the sweeping profile of the stummel while also keeping the visual weight firmly at the shank and bowl. It's all dressed in an incredibly textured sandblast — offering up ripples of ring grain that are more deeply grooved and rugged compared to the American carver's more Danish-inspired finishes (though the smooth polished rim definitely caters toward a Danish influence). With creamy ivorite adorning the shank end, the striking accent transitions well into the jet-black, vulcanite mouthpiece thanks to the trim ring of vulcanite on the other end of the ferrule.
