Rusticated Horn Tobacco Pipe

One of Indonesia's few pipe makers, Wandi Ryadi has established himself as an artisan of note, and garnered an international audience of discerning collectors. His work takes inspiration from Japanese and Danish masters, like the Ivarssons, Bo Nordh, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and as such, his work is often highly organic, though he does craft more conservative pieces as well. This Horn showcases Riyadi's deft ability to craft unique forms in a distinctive and eye-catching fashion.

An undeniably attractive piece, this Horn boasts the form's characteristic build, offering a flared, forward-canted bowl, a seamless transition, and a lithe shank-and-stem arrangement. The totality of the stummel begins to taper from the wide rim, and it continually diminishes, before finally terminating at the start of the half-saddle mouthpiece. Said mouthpiece continues the stummel's implied trajectory and curves up toward the bit to balance out the bowl's active stance. Riyadi has finished this piece in a crisp rustication that mimics the appearance of growth rings, so that the entire stummel is notched with pronounced grooves that further emphasize the design's crescent shape. Additionally, the warm rustication offers ample texture for the fingers to appreciate, its rugged texture complemented by the rim's jagged plateau.
