Smooth Acorn (Fukuda) (H) (232) (2017) Tobacco Pipe

A former student of Sixten Ivarsson, Kazuhiro Fukuda leads the Ikebana workshop, comprised of Fukuda, Yoshirou Ohi, and Asami Kikuchi. The Ikebana name literally translates to "living flowers" and refers to the highest form of Japanese flower arrangements — designed to instill peace and encourage an appreciation of the natural world, something that tends to be overlooked in day-to-day affairs. Similarly, the Japanese workshop promotes an appreciation for natural forms through creating organically inclined, handmade artisan pipes with one such piece presented here.

Crafted by Fukuda himself, this Acorn represents the Japanese master's penchant for bulbous and organic shapes. The bowl's heartiness is matched by the shank's thickness, while the bowl's base droops slightly past the shank's underside. It's a softer approach to the Acorn, forgoing the sharp, pointed heel spur often associated with the shape in favor of a more rounded one that complements rest of the bowl's gentle shaping. The low-set transition amplifies the bowl's visual prominence and offers ample room for the thumb to rest naturally, further accentuating this piece's comfortable in-hand feel. The graceful, upward arcing nature of the shank is continued by the saddle stem before terminating in an elegant downturn. I'm particularly captivated by how Fukuda shaped this piece to showcase the best of what the briar has to offer, with streaks of flame grain climbing the bowl's chubby flanks and mingles with birdseye along the rim. A gorgeous piece that readily reflect Fukuda's status as a master artisan and decades of experience.
