About This Pipe
Abe Herbaugh's experiences in long distance hiking and in woodworking as a guitar maker and restorer helped him to develop the determination and keen eye for detail that elevated him to his current status as one of the United States' most highly regarded pipe makers. His style is characterized by its Danish influences and unique, skillfully crafted accents. A subtle asymmetry informs this Tomato from Herbaugh, giving it a supple and organic appearance. From a curvaceous heel, the bowl's walls curve up to a domed and undulating rim. Thanks to the steeper taper at the aft wall, the bowl gives a distinct impression of forward motion that is uncommon to the shape. Out back, Herbaugh has done an excellent job integrating the shape of the stem into the overall pipe by forming its base to echo the visual rhythm of the bamboo shank's knuckles. For its length, this is a relatively lightweight pipe, and the outstretched, uplifted shank-and-stem arrangement offers a comfortable smoking posture. Thanks to its shallow chamber, this Tomato would find a great home with somebody looking to add a shorter smoke to their rotation.
