About

IMCO has been in the lighter business a long time; since 1918 in fact. Originally founded as a button and hardware manufacturer by Julius Meister in 1907, following WWI changes in market demands led Julius to convert the entire operation over to producing pipe and cigarette lighters. This in turn led to IMCO becoming one of the best-known makers of the old "trench lighter" (which used surplus cartridge brass for the fuel tank), predecessor of the Zippo.

In this model IMCO offers something considerably more modern - not to mention lighter in the pocket, yet still offering plenty of butane capacity as well as a fold out tamper and reaming blade.

I have smoked pipes for many years and grew up on IMCO lighters. I recall searching for replacements for my IMCO lighters because the manufacturer reportedly went out of business several years age, and their lighters weren't available anymore. I was surprised to find them back on the market again. I don't know if the rights to use the name was purchased by someone who has remarket them is what happened or what. This lighter is not the original lighter. These new IMCO lighters are worth the price if you consider that they only cost the equivalent of a few disposables ones but will last longer. I also like this lighter over the electric spark lighters that weigh heavier in your pocket. The tamper is for light use only in cases when you misplace your normal tamper, so it's not a big deal if it's a little flimsy. So far, I've had mine long enough to replace the flint twice, and it still performs as good as the day I got it. The only shortcoming is all the pictures of pipes on the side. These lighters are imo complete garbage. The original Imco black and silver pipe lighters would last a decade. You're lucky to get a solid year out of these. For the money, get a zippo
