About This Pipe Tobacco
Midnight Orchard is the first Small Batch aromatic, proving an aromatic can be every bit as nuanced and rewarding as any premium blend. Featuring Blackened Bright Virginias from 2023, vibrant Lemon Bright Virginias from 2019 and 2023, heirloom Old Belt Red Virginias from 2019 and 2022, and genuine St. James Perique sourced from 31 Farms, Midnight Orchard delivers a richly layered smoking experience. The flavor profile features notes of dark fruit and citrus mingled with loamy earth and warming spice. Fragrant and contemplative, it evokes the atmosphere of an ancient orchard suspended in twilight, where every bowl reveals new dimensions of alluring aromatics.
Customer Reviews
I guess what I’m getting at is… thankfully for all parties involved, this tobacco is NOT loamy. You’re not going to detects hints of silt and decaying organic matter. No sand, either. Wouldn’t that be unpleasant?...Read More
But does it smell like some sort of fruit I can’t quite identify? You bet.
C&D describes this as appealing to pipe smokers who aren’t really into aromatics.
I agree in part.
The underlying tobacco is quality stuff, so if you’re someone who avoids the heavily-sauced, PG-impregnated, low quality Cavendish aromatics, this may be to your liking.
If, however, you’re someone who avoids aromatics because of the topping itself—say, you just don’t like to smell a lot of fruit while smoking— look elsewhere. While the tobacco rules the blend here, the topping is stronger than I expected.
I like the topping and, as I mentioned, my wife loves it. So this is a good fit for me.
But not for someone who wants a faintly scented tobacco experience.
I bought 6 tins and that feels like the right amount for my cellar. I’m not sure I’ll turn to this one regularly, like I do with some of the other Small Batch releases (lookin’ at you. Firebird and Steamworks).
In all, I’d say C&D’s foray into steaming and caramelizing high-sugar Virginias is off to a strong start.
I’d also say that this isn’t one to wail and gnash your teeth about missing out on. I’m confident it will be well-received And that we’ll see a return in the future....Read More
