Rivertown Tobacco Works - Crimson Shadow
Pretty darn good.
Overall, I didn't know what to expect out of this tobacco. The note on my first smell reminded me of Briar Fox. The tobacco was at the perfect moisture level straight out of the bag. It packed well and burned most of the way through with some tamping and only one relight. The Virginia is forward in this tobacco and has a very sweet earthy taste. I enjoyed it from the start to the finish and will most likely keep this around. I didn't catch a topper or casing, but I was paying attention to the delightful tobacco flavors over anything. If you like a good sweet Virginia with some earthy flavors intertwined give this one a whirl. Stay blessed and enjoy the smoke.

Cornell & Diehl - Cube Cut Burley
Glad I tried this.
Thought I might give this a try based off other reviews and I am glad I did. I've had 4 bowls of this in various pipes to see the difference and I have found it smokes incredibly cool and tastes great in every pipe I've had it in. There is a distinct taste of burly and that bitter nuttiness flavor and this is forward throughout the bowl. I didn't pick up any casings, just great high quality tobacco. The smoke is cool and dry and very enjoyable. The nicotine is most definitely there, but i don't think it's as high as the rating suggests. Overall, I'm really glad I tried this one and as long as it's made, I'll have some in my rotation.

Daughters & Ryan - Three Sails
Great taste
I have had Three sails in my stock before and didn't care for it for what it was. Very straight forward mild taste, mild nicotine tobacco. It does have that fresh cut hay smell and taste. I bought it this time as a blender. I wanted that taste in the blend I am working on. I tried another bowl before I mixed and I have to say this is good tobacco. I didn't appreciate the simplicity before, but giving this another gorgeous around with a super slow cadence in a cob pipe was well worth it. I could see enjoining this as a morning smoke with a cup of coffee easily. It tastes good, lights easy and burns all the way through with the same flavors. For the price point it's well worth a try, just smoke it slow!! Happy smoking fellas.

Cornell & Diehl - Big 'n' Burley
Really good burley blend
I've smoked around three bowls of this blend now and have yet to taste anything much other then the burley. It's very good for what it is and could easily be an all day smoke for me. I find that it's very similar to Duke Albert from Sutliff. Simple, chocolate and stone fruit type flavors behind it. If your a burley fan and you like the old school American style pipe tobacco, try this one on. It's simple, flavorful and easy on the tongue.

Sutliff - Sail Yellow Match
Decent
I've ordered this tobacco in the past and remember it being better. That neither here nor there. A pallet can change. I tried this in a sample bowl tonight. At first light I got bitter and something that I couldn't identify. As I sipped into the bowl I began to notice the bitter subsiding and making way to a sweet flavor. I'm a burley fan so I have to say the tobacco is good. It's ribbon cut and easy to light. A few re-lights and it was going. It's simple and easy to smoke. The flavor does seem to mellow out a little further into the bowl and become quite good. It's sweet with mild nicotine. No tongue bite at all. It's not going to make it into my rotation but I could certainly see smoking this one again.

Sutliff - Duke Albert
The best there is!
I've been smoking a long time and I will admit I am a bit biast. I like burley tobacco and this in my opinion is the best there is. My grandfather smoked PA nearly my whole life and when I was a kid I'd love the smell of his house. This isn't PA, it's maybe a little sweeter. I don't mind that at all. It's an easy smoking, great tasting, wint break the bank tobacco. I don't taste anything other then burley in this blend. Lots of molasses and coco in the background. In my opinion it's the best. I keep this one in stock and typically buy it by the pound.

Sutliff - Estate Blend
A good smoke
I tried my first bowl of this tonight and on the char light my thoughts went to Carter Hall. It's not an exact match, but darn close. As I continued my smoke, I thought I tastes some cigar leaf in there, but near the bottom of the bowl I found it was the bourbon I was tasting. The vanilla is nearly non existent but it's there way at the back. Overall I could smoke this easily all day and will most likely purchase a lot more of it. It's a good tasting tobacco with burley at the four front. Simple and easy with very little thought involved. I had no issues with bite at all and it was a little dry coming out of the bag. About the perfect moisture level for me. I sipped slow and had a few re-lights along the way. If your into good easy smoking tobacco that doesn't break the bank and tastes good, give this one a whirl.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Dark Bird's Eye
Just a great smoke
I enjoy this tobacco on a level that I can't put into words. I have a top five, and this one has found itself at number two on my list. I love everything about it, from the shag cut to the sweet, smoky flavoring of the tobacco. It is satisfying and tangy throughout. I recommend this to anyone who knows how to keep a proper cadence when smoking a pipe.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Bob's Chocolate Flake
Delicious
This tobacco has found its way into my top five favorites. The subtle taste of chocolate is present throughout the bowl, and it's purely delightful from the first light down to the last puff. I'd recommend this tobacco to anyone interested in an enjoyable smoking experience that you don't have to think too much about.

Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Ennerdale Flake
A flavor journey
Thought I would give this tobacco a try and ordered an ounce. At first light it seemed a little peppery, but then came the flavors. The burley is overshadowed by the wonderful flavors of Virginia and the Lakeland essence that I have heard so much about, but never tried shine like a majestic star. It is delicious. My nose tells me that this tobacco reminds me of my grandmother and the smells in her house. It brings back warm memories. I'd recommend this flake for anyone looking to take a trip back in time.

Cornell & Diehl - Oriental Silk
Great smoke
I ordered a one ounce sampler of this tobacco recently and found it to be a good all around smoke. Something close to spicy fish baked bread if I had to try to explain the flavors. I could see this being an all day smoke, or at the very least in my top 10 rotation. It's easy to light, stays lit near the entirety of the bowl. The smoke is flavorful and light on the draw. No young bite at all, even when I got a little overzealous with it. Sit back, light up and enjoy the variety of flavors you will get.

Cornell & Diehl - Palmetto Balkan 8oz

I have not tried this fine-looking tobacco yet; however, I am a fan of other Balkan blends, and I am looking forward to seeing how C and D do with it. I've got mine on the way.

My Wintertime Smoking Rotation
  • ► My pipe smoking rotation centers around my top 5 favorite tobaccos and that doesn't change through the year. Though I love to sample new tobacco regularly I don't get smitten easily with them. They have to be something really special. 1. Duke Albert from Sutliff. Long gone are the days of walking into my grandfather's house and smelling Prince Albert. The Duke is a match to this and from what I recall it's close and slightly sweeter. It's a great start to my day and an all day smoke if I want it. Simple, pleasant and tasty. 2. G and H Dark Birds Eye. It doesn't matter if it's the shag cut or the original cut, this smoke is satisfying on all fronts. Loaded with taste and easy to smoke. It's far more of an after dinner smoke but also one that I can enjoy at any hour. 3. C and D Old Joe Krants. A good all around tobacco. It's got the flavor of good strong burley tobacco and hints of Virginia. I like my smokes to be Simple and easy and this one pleases on both fronts. 4. G and H Bob's Chocolate Flake. What a ln amazing number this one is. A truly delightful smoke. Chocolate cake and nutty sweetness behind it. This is another that goes well in the evening but can be enjoyed at anytime. 5. C and D Night Train. This is the only tobacco that I keep in stock that I can not get in bulk. It's worth it though. It's strong and forward. The cake breaks apart easily and can be enjoyed anytime. That's my main line up. Anytime of any day these are the ones I'm most likely to reach for. Happy smoking fellas.
