Gawith Hoggarth & Co. - Grasmere Flake

I really want to like this, everything about it appeals to me. But this is the only tobacco I've ever tried that actively stings my mouth when smoking it. Not like a heat burn or anything, just anywhere the smoke touches starts to tingle with pain like a mild hot sauce. Maybe a bad batch? I don't know. But I really want to try something with as much rose and geranium as this.

I let it sit in the cellar for maybe 4 to 6 months and that plasticy asphalt flavor chilled out enough to make this a very fun smoke. It's like if you left a brisket on the smoker until it was burnt to an absolute crunchy crisp. Crushed it up into a powder and put that in your pipe and smoked it. Very masculine smoke, heavy nicotine hit.

Well, the first time I ordered this I was so intrigued by the lemon virginia and the flavor was very strong in the blend. Almost tasted like a lemon girl scout cookie and I really liked it. The second 2 oz I bought completely lacked this quality and was just a sort of run of the mill mild english/balkan blend. I suppose that is the risk of buying bulk? Probably won't buy again if it can't guarantee that interesting lemon citrus flavor.

Two Friends - Redwood 2oz
not what I expected but good
It's very cocoa and mildly sweet flavored to me. Maybe that's what stoved red virginia is like? Not sure. I don't get hardly any perique, just baaarely on the retro but it is a nice subtle complexity. I don't really understand the "woodsy" thing people are talking about but maybe thats just me. It's a cool smoke for sure that produces thick silky clouds and burns at a moderate pace, it's good for a relatively quick bowl. Low nicotine which I'm getting more into for all day smoking. Would recommend but I'm not sure I'll buy it again. I still have a bunch of Mac Baren London Blend which hits the spot for that cocoa flavor for me.

Tampers & Tools - Savinelli Tamper - White
probably not worth the pricetag
Looks nice enough. It's quite small and is very lightweight. I wish it had a bit more mass. The tamping end is smaller than your average czech tool and I would prefer wider. The acrylic makes it feels chinzy and it should be priced closer to the 8-15 dollar range but the name brand is probably why its higher.

Mac Baren - Stockton 100g
Can't get enough
This stuff is masterful. Smooth, flavorful, slightly sweet, burns hot but doesn't bite. I think the main flavor component is the cavendish. It's semi-sweet and rich but mellow and relaxing. I struggle to find flavor analogies. Maybe like warm molasses cookies, a hint of orange peel left in the mouth. It's spicy but more like a muted nutmeg. A lot of the smokiness from the dfk base is canceled out so don't expect any bbq sauce tang, its been smoothed out. Slightly grassy from the virginias but it's not exactly leading like it might in something like Stokkebye PS400 or Davidoff flake medallions, although the latter might be a decent comparison due to the similar cavendish flavoring. I'm so glad I bought two of these tins because I'm smoking this stuff almost every day right now.

Cornell & Diehl - Mississippi Mud 8oz
smooth and silk
One of my absolute favorites. Very distinct, the Cavendish really ties this blend together. It's smooth, cool, smokey, minerally. A pleasure every time with very little room for failure.

Low Country - Atalaya 2oz
top 5 for sure
I love this stuff. I have a thing for tangy savory spicy complexity and this one hits all the marks. It gets even better with a few months of age. I wish I could buy it in bulk. update: two or three more tins in. I feel like it looses a lot of its complex tanginess with too much age. It's still good specially if you like that sweetness that comes with aging virginia. But what I really liked about this blend was the tangy spiciness which gets muted over time. Smoke it fresh.

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning 2oz
Decent vaper
Kinda like Old Joe Krantz but sweeter with the VA in there. Was a little milder in flavor than I expected, but it is possible my palate is a little shot right now. I think I like Joe Krantz better but I'll try again in a few weeks.

Peterson - 3 P's Peterson's Perfect Plug 50g
deliciously mild
I didn't like this blend all that much at first. I was looking for more of a dark fired or tangy Virginia. This is much mellower but in really great ways. It must be the burley in the blend. It's highly smokable, consistent, tobacco flavors. Doesn't coat your mouth the way some virginia blends do. Not cloying in any way. The topping, if there is one, I'm doubtful, is incredibly subtle. Interesting all the way down but not super demanding.

Cornell & Diehl - Pirate Kake 8oz
Maximum latakia
I like it, but for me its right on the edge of being too much Latakia. It almost smokes bitter. Not necessarily in a bad way, sort of like a dark porter or stout with that bitterness in the background but is still smooth overall. That said, I prefer Ten Russians to Pirate Kake. It's just a bit smoother on my pallet but the same delicious campfire smokiness.
