My Favorite Peter Stokkebye Blend
Peter Stokkebye PS403 Luxury Bullseye Flake is my favorite tobacco from the Stokkebye line. It offers a combination of natural sweetness, gentle spice, and smoothness that makes it incredibly easy to come back to. The Virginias provide the foundation with notes of bread, hay, citrus, and a soft honeyed sweetness. The Perique adds a touch of dark fruit and pepper, while the Cavendish center rounds everything out and gives the smoke a little extra softness and richness. What I enjoy most is how balanced the blend feels. It has enough complexity to stay interesting, but it never becomes demanding. The flavors work together naturally, and the coin presentation makes it enjoyable to prepare as well as smoke. This is a blend I can reach for when I want something refined, approachable, and consistently satisfying. For me, it stands at the top of the Peter Stokkebye catalog.

A Truly Classic American Pipe Blend
Cornell & Diehl Pegasus is a wonderful example of a traditional American pipe tobacco—straightforward, satisfying, and built around honest tobacco flavor. The Burley provides the backbone with its familiar nuttiness, earth, wood, and cocoa-like depth, while the Virginias add just enough natural sweetness to keep the blend balanced. The Black Cavendish softens the edges and gives the smoke a little extra roundness without turning Pegasus into an aromatic. What I enjoy most is how comfortable this blend feels. It has that old-school American character that makes it easy to imagine as an all-day smoke: flavorful enough to hold your attention, but never so intense that it becomes tiring. Pegasus is not trying to be exotic or flashy. It is simply a well-made, dependable tobacco that delivers exactly what I want from a classic American mixture.

Cornell & Diehl Founding Fathers was one of the tobaccos that helped begin my journey into aromatics, and it remains a great example of how well an aromatic can work when the flavoring is handled with restraint. One of the Twin Titans of American Burley
Cornell & Diehl Haunted Bookshop is one of my favorite classic American Burley blends, and for me it belongs right alongside Old Joe Krantz. I think of the two almost as twin titans—different in personality, but equally important in my rotation. Haunted Bookshop delivers exactly the kind of profile I want from a traditional Burley mixture: earthy, nutty, dry, slightly woody, and unapologetically tobacco-forward. The Virginia contributes a little natural sweetness, while the Perique adds pepper, depth, and just enough dark fruit to keep the blend lively. What I enjoy most is the honesty of it. There is nothing flashy here. It is robust, straightforward, and full of character, with a ruggedness that somehow makes it even more appealing. Smoked slowly, the nuttiness deepens, the spice settles into the background, and the blend becomes wonderfully cohesive. Haunted Bookshop and Old Joe Krantz go hand in hand for me, and I am a huge fan of both. This is classic American Burley done exceptionally well.

I get the classic nuttiness and cocoa-like depth I enjoy, along with earth, wood, and a darker, slightly rustic character that gives the blend real substance. The Virginia adds just enough natural sweetness to round things out, while the Dark-Fired Kentucky contributes a deeper smoky, savory edge without taking over the blend. What really separates Burley Flake #5 for me is the balance between strength and refinement. It has plenty of body and presence, but it never feels crude or one-dimensional. Smoked slowly, it becomes richer as the bowl progresses, with the nutty, woody, and darker flavors settling into a beautifully cohesive smoke. This is not a delicate tobacco, and I would not want it to be. It is robust, honest, tobacco-forward, and immensely satisfying. Of all the Burley flakes I have smoked so far, this is my favorite.

The bourbon influence is present, but restrained. It complements the tobacco rather than covering it up. What I enjoy most is the balance. There is enough sweetness to make it immediately appealing, but the blend still feels composed and tobacco-driven. As the bowl develops, the flavors deepen and become a little richer, with the darker wood and fruit notes coming forward without losing the blend’s overall smoothness. It is the kind of tobacco that rewards a relaxed smoke and feels special without becoming gimmicky. For a limited small-batch release, this is exactly what I hope for: distinctive, well-executed, and memorable. I am very glad I was able to pick some up.

Peterson Nightcap is simply an amazing tobacco, and for me it has become an important part of both my evening routine and my journey into English blends. This is a richer, fuller English mixture than Early Morning Pipe, with a deeper Latakia presence and a darker overall character. The smoke brings layers of campfire, earth, leather, wood, and a deep savory richness, while the Orientals add complexity and the Perique contributes a subtle spicy edge underneath it all. What I love most is how complete the experience feels. Nightcap is bold without being crude, powerful without becoming exhausting, and deeply flavorful from the first light to the bottom of the bowl. It has the kind of weight and complexity that makes me want to slow down and pay attention. This has become one of those tobaccos I naturally reach for at the end of the day. It feels perfectly suited to a quiet evening, when I want something substantial, contemplative, and deeply satisfying. Nightcap has played an important role in helping me understand just how much I enjoy darker, fuller English mixtures.

For me, De Luxe Navy Rolls is an excellent VaPer and one I can easily see keeping in regular rotation.

This is not a flashy tobacco—it is simply deeply satisfying, especially when I want something with more weight than a straight Virginia but without the smokiness of an English mixture. For me, University Flake is an outstanding tobacco and one I consider genuinely special.

Mac Baren - Mixture Scottish Blend 3.5oz

Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend is one of those tobaccos that seems to offer a little something different with every bowl. It has a wonderfully balanced character—naturally sweet, gently nutty, lightly spicy, and occasionally touched by darker, almost cocoa-like notes. What stands out most to me is the complexity without heaviness. There is plenty going on, but no single flavor dominates the experience. The sweetness remains restrained, the tobacco character stays front and center, and the blend develops nicely as the bowl progresses. It is smooth, approachable, and flavorful enough to hold my attention from beginning to end. I particularly enjoy the way the different components seem to weave in and out rather than presenting one fixed flavor profile. That makes it a tobacco I can return to often without becoming bored with it. For me, this is an excellent example of a traditional Scottish-style mixture: nuanced, balanced, dependable, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Capstan - Flake Blue 1.75oz
A Benchmark Virginia Flake
Capstan Flake Blue is a beautifully refined Virginia that manages to be flavorful without becoming fussy. The tobacco presents a natural sweetness with notes of bread, hay, light citrus, and a darker dried-fruit character that develops as the bowl progresses. What I appreciate most is the balance. There is enough depth to keep the smoke interesting, but nothing feels forced or overworked. The sweetness is clearly tobacco-driven rather than aromatic, and the overall profile remains clean, smooth, and composed from beginning to end. As with most flakes, a little attention to preparation pays off, but once properly packed and lit, Capstan Blue rewards you with a cool, steady smoke and very little harshness. It has enough body to satisfy, while still retaining the elegance I look for in a traditional Virginia. For me, this is an excellent benchmark Virginia flake and one I would happily keep in rotation.

Cornell & Diehl - Green River Vanilla 2oz
The Aromatic That Changed My Mind
I approached Green River Vanilla with modest expectations. After trying other aromatics, I’d begun to think they simply weren’t for me. Most seemed overly sweet, fussy to keep lit, and less rewarding than the burleys and flakes I usually enjoy. Green River Vanilla completely changed my mind. After about 20 minutes of drying time and a firm pack in a stacked bowl, it performed beautifully. It lit easily, required no relights, burned cool at a relaxed cadence, and stayed dry from beginning to end. The mechanics alone are outstanding. The flavor is what won me over. This isn’t a syrupy, candy-like vanilla aromatic. The tobacco remains the star, while the vanilla complements rather than overwhelms it. The sweetness is restrained, natural, and finishes with a smooth, lingering vanilla note that never becomes cloying. If you’re primarily a burley smoker who’s been skeptical of aromatics, this blend deserves a place on your shortlist. It made a convert out of me. Rating: 5/5
