About This Pipe
Crafted by Johannes Rasmussen, the artisan behind Suhr pipes, this Bulldog presents several fascinating elements that make it a truly remarkable piece from the young Danish artisan. This offering is the first Bulldog shape we've received from Johannes and immediately evokes the appearance of his oft-seen Rhodesian renditions. The Rhodesian's rounded shank is here traded for the Bulldog's firm-lined, diamond shank, adding structure and crispness to the profile. The shape's archetypal beadlines are maintained, with a smooth band of briar positioned in between and encircling the bowl's midsection. That smooth briar is echoed at the rim, offering contrast to the craggy, yet texturally pleasing rustication that adorns the majority of the stummel. The ruggedness suits this shape wonderfully, pairing exceptionally well with the shank's crisp ridgelines to deliver an abundance of engaging texture.
Perhaps most notable about this piece is the genuine horn stem Johannes has crafted. The horn mouthpiece lends this piece a retro aesthetic, hearkening back to one of the earliest eras of briar pipes and showcases a beautiful palette of cream and caramel hues. Its mix of dark and light hues pair well with the stummel's coloration while the saddle stem's base has been shaped to perfectly align with the shank's ridges. Each element of this composition comes together to form a timeless shape executed in a remarkably modern style by an immensely talented artisan.
