Partially Rusticated Calabash with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

The traditional Calabash, originally crafted from gourd, is one of the most iconic and immediately recognizable designs in pipe making. It's been a popular shape depicted throughout literature, film, and pop culture over the years. famous for its sinuously bent, serpentine-like silhouette. However, it's a form not often rendered by artisan carvers but this briar rendition from Johannes Rasmussen, the artist behind Suhr pipes, is a stellar interpretation of the timeless shape. It's not nearly as sinuously bent as classic gourd renditions, the stem displaying a barely perceptible bend that's impressively subtle but well-executed.

Perhaps most striking are the contrasting colors and textures at play on this piece. The mushroom-shaped cap was fashioned from boxwood and is permanently affixed to the stummel. The pale coloration of the organic medium offers some stunning contrast against the rest of the composition's dark color palette. The cap hangs over the rest of the bowl, its smooth texture echoed by the band of smooth briar directly underneath as well as a trim band along the shank-end. Craggy rustication adorns the rest of the stummel, ensuring a fascinating tactile experience in hand and serves as a perfect complement to the piece's striking visuals. This is the first time we've seen the iconic shape from Johannes but it readily showcases his creativity.
