About This Pipe
I've seen more than a handful of Egg designs from Lasse Skovgaard, but none to my recollection contain the overt creativity of this example. The forward-inclined bowl is statuesque, and while its rim is geometrically round, the bowl beneath it ovals forward between the two crisp, vertical ridgelines that flow from the forward rim and under the heel, meeting the lower ridgelines of the shank that carry through to the shank face in a dramatically flaring gesture.
A concise transition informs the shaping of the lower bowl with conspicuous cheeking and contributes to the elongated vertical Egg structure that rises from the heel. The rim is scalloped along the axis of the shank, providing an additional impression of height in profile, while the top of the shank dashes upward at its end point to add upper curvature in harmony with that of the bowl. Of special interest is the treatment at the base of the stem, which is made of moose antler, a particularly natural element that contrasts vividly with the jet-black stem and the deep tones of the briar for a particularly enticing combination.
