Smooth Bent Bulldog with Muskox Tobacco Pipe

When Manduela Riger-Kusk was apprenticing under renowned artisan carver Poul Ilsted decades ago, she was initially performing some of pipe making's more meticulous, grueling tasks, such as polishing stems, mixing stains, and generally serving as an assistant for the respected carver. Eventually, Poul tasked her with fashioning something at the shaping wheel, but that object wasn't a pipe. It was dice. It was a tedious, time-consuming practice, and one which Manduela had to holistically conquer in order to proceed to the next phase of her training. Ilsted had her produce an untold number of miniature cubes by hand, each time checking the facets with calipers to ensure she got each aspect just right. And when she succeeded, he had her do it again. This anecdote enters my mind whenever I see examples of Manduela's work, and especially when I see pieces that so strongly evoke the crisp-lined, architectural aesthetic championed by the late Poul Ilsted.

This bent Bulldog is rife with Ilsted's influence and full of crisp, precise lines that highlight the care and meticulous detail that goes into crafting each Manduela pipe. The most notable and defining aspect of this Bulldog is the handling of the diamond shank. The ridgeline along the shank's underside seemingly extends the diamond shank through the transition, culminating at the sharp, protruding spur along the heel. That same ridgeline also informs the shank's gradual curve in profile, reaching upward to join the saddle stem. The Bulldog's characteristic beadlines are also present, sitting beneath the tapered rim and beautifully demarcating the lively flame grain that envelopes the bowl's flanks. The warm, rich contrast stain makes the grain even more spectacular and a pale muskox band adorns the stem base, providing modest contrast while allowing the gorgeous grain and superb shaping to remain the primary focus.
