About This Pipe

Things that have continuity always seem to be inherently pleasing and gratifying. When applied to pipe making, I feel that quality is somehow heightened, especially in the context of Lasse Skovgaard's work. It's readily evident in the line work of this bent Apple. The half saddle stem not only adds a dose of playfulness to the design's silhouette, it perfectly continues the flowing nature established by the shank's crisp ridgelines. Those ridgelines also emphasize the bowl's plumpness, creating prominent cheeking around the transition while its sweeping gesture guides the eyes to the bowl. The gracefully arcing nature of stem does well to continue the form's consistent curve, ending in an elegant downturn that promises effortless clenching. Just as spectacular as the shaping of this piece is how the Danish artisan has read the grain of this briar block, fully maximizing its visual potential. Lively licks of flame grain wrap around the bowl's flanks, all dressed in a beautiful contrast stain. All together, this piece deftly demonstrates Lasse's ability to take a shape and re-imagine it through his own creative lens.
