About This Pipe

For all intents and purposes, the "8644" bent Brandy from Rossi is identical in form to their "8645" rendition — the main difference being the stem style. Those who prefer tapered stems will appreciate the "8645," while those drawn to saddle stems ought to consider this "8644." It's a stout, compact, and muscular bent Brandy, almost like a bent Pot but with the bowl tapering toward the rim. The robustness of the lower bowl and heel is continued through the transition and shank for a consistent aesthetic, and the S-curve ensures a well-balanced posture when clenched. It's a versatile pipe, easily stowed away when needed, and catering to those who enjoy more substantial Brandies compared to, say, the more slender, taller "8628" within the Italian marque's portfolio.

Introduced in 2023, Rossi's Mezzanotte line is a no-nonsense series that prioritizes timeless traditionalism and a conservative presentation that draws focus to this pipe's line and form. Marked by a dark stain and rugged rustication, the Mezzanotte series appropriately translates to "Midnight" in Italian and offers just the right amount of texture in hand. It remains balanced between traditional Italian and English pipe making styles — the rustication calling to mind the dramatic, extra-craggy finishes often seen throughout Italian pipe making, but the lighter depth hewing closer to the stately English aesthetic — with the dark palette and grooved surface hiding any handling marks this piece might pick up over the years.

A comfortable and versatile pipe at an incredible value.

Product: Rossi Mezzanotte (8644) (6mm)
I admit to looking for the Savinell model 644 at length before coming across the Rossi Mezz. As those are becoming even rarer still, here exists the consummate homely cousin, that one you didn't take to the homecoming dance (and came to regret it) ...the 8644. It smokes my favorite blends well, is comfortable to clench, and still pulls that wonderful bent brandy charm in any room. Wouldn't say it was ornate or feature-rich, save that it's a sitter pipe (well, "rocker" pipe...as it comes to a teetering yet stable halt on its well-shaped, somewhat flattened heel). You'll have to look pretty far for a better reason than I found not to make it a next pipe, if you like this shape and dimensions. The unexpected versatility, compactness, and relative thrift of this one mean it will find its way into your roll, pouch, or bag when those grails, art pieces, and treasures have to remain safely behind. You will eventually smoke this pipe (and others in its "class") more, as it will be one of the pipes you have with you. How's that for another splash of value?! Truly enjoying my Mezz....Read More
