Well simply put, it's his impressive ability to incorporate multiple levels of grain into a cohesive composition. Take this bent Billiard for example. The smoky contrast stain reveals tight, slender licks of flame jumping up all around the bowl, yet the crisp sandblast unearths finely stacked undulating rings ascending from the base, too. And he does it all without compromising the clean, crisp lines of the underlying shape, making for one gorgeous pipe.
