About This Pipe
This Dublin shape is well-served by Mike Sebastian Bay's straightforward shaping and finishing technique, imbued as it is with a pronounced touch of forward cant about the bowl, followed by a more slender, rounded shank and saddle stem. It's a seriously lightweight number, the likes of which one can readily imagine reaching for as an everyday companion, no doubt. Presented here in the carver's signature rustication style, learned from his time in Tom Eltang's workshop, the easy shape is rendered rugged and playful, offering a stimulating feel in hand and likewise a pleasant juxtaposition of texture and color, given the broad, contrast-stained rim. Said stain brilliantly accentuates tight whorls of birdseye, balanced at the other end by a stem base of creamy, striated horn.
