About This Pipe
Drawing on a range of stylistic influences, Micah Redmond's shaping style combines American muscularity with the sleek, flowing curves of Danish and Japanese pipes, his body of work showing an inclination toward plump designs overall. While much of Redmond's work features compact dimensions, this long-shanked rendition of his signature Apple shape eschews the stockier nature of the American school of design in favor of lengthier proportions, though it still retains a consistent muscularity throughout. Posed at the fore is a squat, plump bowl, its supple walls providing a comfortable presence in hand. The bowl's subtly forward-ebbing stance keeps the composition active, pairing with a thick shank out back curving gently upward for a dynamic profile. An amboyna burl accent adorns the shank end as it meets a gingerly downturned saddle stem, whose rounded base accentuates this piece's soft disposition. Dressing the stummel is a crisp, inky sandblast, its dark, rugged complexion contrasted delightfully by the stem's creamy, peach-hued Bakelite.
