About This Pipe

Handmade pipes do not always fit into tidy shape categories, and while this pipe from Micah Redmond is undoubtedly a Dublin, it is a smoothed, lengthier version of the form. The firm, angular lines of the pipe chart shape have been smoothed down, its bowl canted forward and elongated into an oval-shaped cross-section. A lenticular shank meets bowl's heel in a continuous arc, terminating only at the tip of its rim. This unbroken line makes for a shape that fits naturally in the palm, as well as striking a profile that is informed by the Danish modern styles, but inherently American. The excellent sandblasted finish has revealed an array of ring grain rippling up around bowl, and creates a stimulating feel in hand. The rim has been finished smooth and given a warmer, walnut stain, showing off tight whorls of birdseye. A compact but deep chamber is hidden under the hood, rounding out a piece of well-engineered craftsmanship.
