Rusticated Apple with Horn Tobacco Pipe

Brazilian carver Luis Lavos gained an appreciation for woodworking as a child in his grandfather's workshop. He grew up to study graphic arts, but his early appreciation for woodwork never left him, so it seemed only natural for him to take up pipe making. Lavos learned an immense amount about the craft from Sabina Santos, Premal Chheda, and Hans "Former" Nielsen, and he cites Tom Eltang and Jess Chonowitsch as influences on his work. Danish influence is evident in this Apple, as it possesses the same supple curves, precise line work, and organic sensibility found in that school of design.

A compact design, this Apple measures less than five inches long, making it perfect for on-the-go smoking. Shape-wise, this piece features a plump bowl that stands at the fore of a trim shank and slender tapered stem. Said bowl tapers from its wide heel to its taut rim, and as it does, it takes on a low-set waistline that conforms naturally to the hand. The shank and stem lend balance to the composition and keep the aft side looking sleek and streamlined in profile. A striking rustication dresses the stummel and mimics the appearance of growth rings, while an accent of horn adorns the junction and lends a touch of vibrant color to the pipe's otherwise muted palette.
