Natural Smooth Volcano with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Luiz Lavos spent much of his time growing up in his grandfather's woodworking workshop and gained an affinity for the craft. When Lavos began carving pipes, he connected with several pipe making legends, such as Sabina Santos, Premal Chheda, and Hans "Former" Nielsen, and was able to draw on their knowledge to improve every aspect of his pipes. Now an excellent pipe maker in his own right, Lavos commonly crafts traditional Danish shapes and prioritizes function over flashy accents, although he occasionally incorporates organic materials into his designs.

This Volcano by Luiz Lavos possesses a forward-thrusting bowl, the walls gently arcing toward the fore as they taper to the concave rim, which is chamfered to assist with packing tobacco. Interestingly, the visual weight of this piece is not focused on the bowl, rather, the shank takes center stage, which dramatically flares from a low-set transition to the broad, convex shank face. The rearward shift of the compositional weight results in the profile appearing quite lengthy, when it actually measures in under six inches in length. Furthermore, the shank face meets the vulcanite stem at a broad accent of Ivorite on the base, its white hues adding a bright flourish of color. Moreover, the stummel is also dressed in warm, blonde hues due to the use of a natural finish, which highlights the exquisite natural beauty of the briar.
