About This Pipe

Based in Germany, Japanese-born artisan Ken Dederichs fuses both of those schools of design with Danish sensibilities, his portfolio characterized by muscular proportions and organic shaping. This bent Apple from Dederichs thoroughly illustrates his signature style, an exceptionally curvaceous piece with plenty of palm-filling substance. Forward-ebbing in its disposition, the bowl's rotund figure contours naturally to the hand as its hearty, plump walls curve gracefully from the sweeping, upturned heel toward the softly undulating rim. A pinched transition out back gives way to a stout shank that flares broadly to a mushroom-like domed face, inlaid with a brass ring as it accepts a slender, arcing push-style stem with a crisp expansion ring at its base. The stummel here showcases Dederichs' handsome finishing work, enveloped in a crisp, inky sandblast that reveals fine growth rings across both flanks, with the rich, glossy, smooth finish of the rim and shank face offering a fine contrast.
