About This Pipe

Living in Germany, Japanese carver Ken'ichiro Dederichs tends to shape pipes in a Danish-inspired aesthetic, evident in this bent Egg's pacific curvature from heel to rim. It's enveloped in a shape-preserving, low-profile sandblast with very tight growth rings uniformly oriented in concentric grooves that subtly climb the flanks to the smooth and reserved rim. The bend of the shank develops in a complementary curve, juxtaposing the near side of the bowl, and rises just slightly to meet the saddle mouthpiece. An unpretentious contrast stain flatters the soft shaping of the bowl, sustaining a uniform color when it's casually viewed, but revealing tight tendrils of vertical grain on closer inspection when one wishes to investigate the natural wonder of the briar in detail.
