About This Pipe
What's especially noticeable about this Apple from Jody Davis is the way the shank-and-stem combination reduces as it extends from the bowl, a detail that adds drama and substance to the forward curvature of the stummel. In profile, the base is a broad, partial ellipse and exhibits all the geometric precision of an inspired mathematical formula. The bowl tapers upward to a concise rim, which is sandblasted and gently chamfered.
From above, the shank's oval is broad, with a soft taper to the crisp lip button. The stem reduces almost as would that of an Author, and is vulcanite patterned with red striations crossing its black background; the stem's color scheme is soothingly harmonious in combination with the near-natural coloration of the stummel. Balance is, of course, remarkable, with the pipe's S-curve providing dynamism and ergonomic comfort whether clenched or hand-held.
