When Jared Coles fashions classic, straight designs, he typically renders them in rather compact and portable size. This Lovat, though, strays from that convention to offer considerable substance and chamber capacity. It's not an oversized piece, but it presents a stolid and muscular demeanor that's perfect for appreciated its rusticated finish. Coles introduced his Weathered rustication around early 2024, and it calls to mind the densely dimpled and cragged rustications championed by Italian workshops while also incorporating striations that mimic sandblasted grain — as if natural elements over years of wear were responsible for the pipe's aesthetic. As a shape, this piece stays true to the timeless Lovat's characteristic design cues, only in increased proportions: The elongated shank is a touch more robust than would be considered standard, and it tapers noticeably from the transition to the abbreviated saddle stem. In a consistent and appreciable touch, Coles continued the shank's taper through the base of the saddle stem, ensuring that the profile's lines remain uninterrupted and incorporating the stem into the rest of the composition.
