Sandblasted Redwood Billiard with Orangewood (1830) (with Tamper) Tobacco Pipe

For this year's American Exposition, Jared Coles presents a piece fashioned from alternative materials native to his home state of California: redwood and orangewood. Jared made this pipe especially personal, too, rendering this chubby Billiard from a redwood fence post taken from his property in northern California. Though abbreviated in length, this piece boasts some decidedly stocky proportions, with a stout shank that matches the firm, thick-walled bowl.

The sandblasted redwood displays absolutely stunning grain. Deep grooves sweep across the stummel in crisp, parallel ridges rippling up the bowl, as if it were gradually eroded over time by a rushing California mountain stream. Coles has accented the piece with orangewood, highlighting the pale wood at the stem base and atop the rim. Ensuring a consistent, quality smoke, the bowl has been endowed with a fixed briar insert for the chamber, and the pipe comes complete with a tamper also made from redwood and orangewood. It's a bold piece, showcasing some of the United States' most unique, indigenous woods — perfect for this year's American Exposition.
