About This Pipe
Revered in the pipe-making world, Hans "Former" Nielsen has continued to hone his skills for more than 60 years, his expert craftsmanship having helped define standards for pipe makers not only in the Danish school but also for schools around the globe. Former's style is recognizable by his unity of elegant shaping, impeccable engineering, and refined presentations, all synergizing with each other to make for pipes that are captivating to the eye, pleasant to the touch, and comfortable to smoke. Within his portfolio are a number of shape-chart classics, with his Apple renditions serving as excellent examples of his sensibilities, as seen here. Measuring five inches in length, this Apple from Former is a lightweight, compact design that's well-suited for on-the-go smoking. The bowl stands with a slight forward cant, its supple walls contouring well to the hand as they curve from the soft heel toward the flat rim. A balanced shank emerges from the bowl out back and meets a trim tapered stem, the arrangement displaying Former's clean, sleek line work. While it's among Former's more streamlined designs, this piece features some subtle stylistic flourishes that lend it a distinctive character, with the stem's plump expansion ring pairing with the rounded shank end to further soften this pipe's profile. Dressing the stummel is a crisp, inky sandblast that accentuates the briar's natural grain, its dark complexion complementing the stem's jet-black vulcanite and creating a reserved palette, with the shank end adorned with a bright, silver accent for a dose of flash.
