About This Pipe
Geiger, maybe, or maybe Grechukhin, or maybe someone else I can't immediately call to mind right now — guessing where the inspiration (or inspirations) for this Max Rimensi design may have come from has not been simple. Overall I'd lean towards some of the Geiger Bodog variations, yet that waistline that appears to be leaning forward, at least from the left, calls to mind Vladimir Grechukhin's signature Rhodesian shape. I say "at least from the left" because one thing quite different between this Il Duca and the aforementioned, possible influences is asymmetry. The natural plateau at rim and shank-end is asymmetrical, obviously, but less conspicuously so is the waistline; its cant is actually directed to the left-forward quarter of the bowl, resulting in its lowest point corresponding with the highest crest of the rim's plateau, and its highest point (the right-rear) with the lowest.
