About This Pipe

Old German Clay pipes are hand-crafted by Markus Fohr in Montabaur, Germany, using the region's prized white clay. Maintaining his family's rich pipe-making tradition, Fohr utilizes antique hand-presses to mold pipes in the style of centuries past, with some of the presses dating back to the late 18th century. Until briar was popularized in the mid 19th century, clay pipes dominated the pipe-smoking milieu, and for many, they were the only smoking instruments available: Meerschaum pipes existed, but clay was more ubiquitous and economically accessible. Most public houses and taverns provided a communal supply of clay pipes, often in long, willowy Churchwarden form. Today, while briar pipes have become the norm for most pipe smokers, clay pipes are still available and offer a distinct aesthetic and what many consider a neutral flavor. In fact, pipe-tobacco blenders often utilize clay pipes when testing and experimenting with prospective mixtures. Clay is more delicate than other pipe-making materials, so special care is advised when storing and traveling with a clay pipe; however, they're incredibly heat-resistant and immune to burnout, making them perfect workhorse smokers. Even though the bowl will get hot, there's no risk of damaging the pipe — they're fired in a kiln during production, after all.

Offered here is a sleek Antique Tavern Belge by Markus Fohr with a black finish, featuring an elongated stem like clay pipes of centuries past.

Note: While all of our other pipes are photographed individually, these are not, and you may expect some reasonable cosmetic variation between the example we've photographed and the pipe you've received.

Wasted Potential Due to Poor QC

Product: Old German Clay Antique Tavern Belge (Black)
Bought one of these and it came to me with a hole poked in the chamber; the rod used to make the airway had been pushed too far, which caused the hole. Thankfully the SP team was willing to replace the pipe, but the replacement was incredibly warped and also cracked in multiple places near the mouthpiece. SP for the win again as they simply gave me a refund this time around, but the QC on this model was clearly lacking for me to get two unsmokable pipes in a row....Read More

Smooth, semi-glossy black finish with subtle irregularities. A jaunty tipped forward bowl of generous capacity and a slight curve to the stem. Cast in a mold over 200 years old. I love it. Smoking this, I feel a connection to past ancestors. If one day it meets with misfortune and is broken, I will return it to the soil of my garden, to be found and hopefully imitated again in the future. I don't worry about charring the rim as with important briars, or ghosting for that matter. I give it a quick rinse under the sink faucet when finished smoking. I have smoked Peterson's Night Cap, Early Morning Pipe, Peter Stokebye's Nougat and Cult Blood Red Moon in this clay. For me, all have been cool, long burning smokes and very enjoyable. Smoking under my maple tree on a cool February day, I'm transformed from mere schlub in a sprawling suburban hell, to Plantation Lord in an unblemished New World, or perhaps a Sailor having a smoke before embarking on a Clipper Ship spice run....Read More
Great For a first time clay

Product: Old German Clay Antique Tavern Belge (Black)
For my birthday this year I purchased some Gentleman's Rum Vanilla along with this pipe. This is my first clay, having used briars and cobs in the past. I've been a pipe smoker for a few years and I've always wanted to try a clay. I picked this one due to the churchwarden dimensions and the price. And boy is it fantastic! It's not the pipe I'd take for a walk. Being a churchwarden it lends it self to a good lawn chair on the patio or driveway. Plus it has a very narrow stem that doesn't really work for clenching in one's teeth. And it's obviously clay and delicate. This pipe draws a very cool smoke, it brings all the flavor to the front, and it surprisingly handles wind quite well. After use, I clean the bowl with a slightly saliva-dampened paper towel and that's all I seem to need to do. Overall, a fantastic pipe. I'm quite happy with it, If you want to taste the booze in your boozy blends like Gentleman's Rum Vanilla, Lord Morgan or Orchard Mist, try them in a clay!...Read More

Product: Old German Clay Antique Tavern Belge (Black)
It took 5 decades of piping and retirement last year before I accepted my faults and purchased my first 2 clays. Everything said about them is gospel truth. From first light to last ash, slow sipping will bring out the true flavor and taste of the tobaccos that you foresee smoking. Don't wait too long to experience this enjoyable reward. I'll be adding more clays to my current array of briers and cobs. Respectfully puffin, ZIGGY P...Read More

While far from the most experienced smoker, I found the quality from this clay to be immaculate. No ghosting, cool smoke, and such a traditional look. It's amazing!
