About This Pipe
Irresistibly compact and curvaceous, this Apple from Chris Asteriou is imbued with class and deftly demonstrates the Greek artisan's gifted eye for proportional balance. It measures four-and-a-half inches in overall length and can be easily slipped into a pocket when necessary, and there are many elements to admire about this piece that deserve to be seen by as many eyes as possible. The bowl's plumpness is particularly evident at its bulging flanks, with its slightly squat disposition and the subtle cheeking around the transition further accentuating its affable chubbiness. Chris has finished the stummel in a texturally pleasing sandblast, unveiling a fascinating array of undulating cross grain with specks of birdseye prominently displayed along the flanks. Similar to many of his other sandblasted pieces, the Greek carver has chamfered the innermost section of the rim and stained it a warm walnut hue that seamlessly blends with the stummel's earthy contrast stain. Asteriou's stellar silverwork is proudly displayed in the form of a bright sterling silver mount along the shank end, which bears his initials as well as a subtle beadline that adds a skillful accenting touch to an already remarkable piece.
