About This Pipe
Exuding Danish style and an affable plumpness, this bent Apple from Jess Chonowitsch features a rounded muscularity packed into nosewarmer dimensions. Even working within such diminutive proportions, Jess is a master of line and shaping — the shank tapering slightly toward the stem from out of the gentle transition, while the bowl's curves are consistently rotund as they rise from the bulbous heel. Apart from the diminution of the saddle stem, not a single hard line interrupts this piece's curvature, even the rim is slightly inflated to continue the round motif. Chonowitsch is widely considered the best pipemaker in the world. His proportions are perfect and his engineering and stem work are of the utmost quality, coveted by collectors. Such a piece as this would still be superlative in a jet-black finish, but the mahogany stain here is the cherry on top. The vivid contrast hue highlights the briar's natural flame grain, sweeping consistently around the bowl in a gorgeous display.
