About This Pipe
A stunning interpretation of the Cavalier, this morta rendition from Chris Askwith keenly exhibits the English carver's talent for artistically modifying traditional designs. Measuring more than seven inches long and featuring a dramatically flaring, flat-heeled Dublin bowl, it is a sturdy sitter, thanks to the base and elegantly tapering stem. The lengthy, slender shank sweeps through the lower bowl, giving it a "pierced" disposition. The English carver has engineered this piece so that it is a fully functioning Cavalier, with the airway terminating in a cap that can be removed to drain excess moisture that may accumulate.
The stummel is crafted from morta, an alternative medium appreciated for its light weight and flavor-neutral smoking properties and certainly one with which Askwith is well acquainted. It's dressed in a dark sandblast, the morta also beloved by many for its intriguing grain patterns made readily apparent in this finish. The all-black color palette imparts a reserved, tasteful aesthetic in this striking piece that does well to highlight the artisan's versatile style.
