About This Pipe
The Devil Anse was a shape popularized by the Hatfields and McCoys miniseries, striking the zeitgeist in such a way as to reinvigorate the design for both collectors and pipe makers. Chris Askwith is one such pipe maker who often crafts the shape out of a variety of different woods, showcasing a penchant for morta and briar in particular. It's a shape that Askwith has a clear affinity for, deftly rendering the supple, softly curvaceous bowl that boasts a fine bit of cheeking at the transition and the demure, pocket-friendly size perfect for on-the-go smoking. The four pieces are crafted from morta, a petrified bog oak; strawberry wood, a light hardwood; and traditional briar, respectively. They each have either a low-profile sandblast or a glossy smooth finish, making for a variety of unique textures and rich aesthetic diversity. They are all topped off by vibrant polyester stems, save for the morta rendition, which possesses a distinctive, briar stem.
